For those of us who did not grow up while Marilyn Monroe was alive, Warhol's depictions of her may well be one of the first things that come to mind when we hear her name. Therefore, we can never experience these works in the same way as contemporary viewers, to whom it would have been a novel and perhaps shocking portrayal of a face they knew so well.
