A walking cane that once belonged to “The Big Fellow” Michael Collins is set to draw bids at an auction house next week. The 19th Century walking stick was once owned by Collins as he used it to disguise himself as a “Businessman” at hotels and other venues throughout Dublin. "The Big Fellow" Michael Collins would carry the cane to blend in with the business crowd in Dublin hotels Kilkenny auction house Fonsie Mealy’s said Collins would carry the cane to “blend in with the gentleman folk” in an attempt to avoid detection from royal guards. The cane was eventually gifted to Patrick Baker, the head barman of the Gresham Hotel in Dublin in 1920, after he “failed” to identify Collins to British agents during a raid. The winning bidder will also receive a letter telling the story of the gifted cane and other memorabilia, including an original menu for Jammet's Restaurant, where Mr Baker went on to be head waiter. Letter of provenance passed down through Mr Baker's family .
