Sierra Leone is fascinating- it’s like the British version of Liberia, a settler state founded by an imperial power to repatriate emancipated freemen.
Sounds like this king was the ruler of one of the local kingdoms on the interior who had to contend with this new presence. Initially, relations with the Europeans were friendly. But over time, his descendants lost control of their kingdom to their own squabbling and the Europeans took over.
Same thing happened to the Kingdom of Kongo, which despite being a devoutly Catholic convert state, was eventually overrun by the Portuguese who were their original external contacts.
