Linux streams and output redirection
What do you need to host a Gemini capsule?
In the autumn of 2018 I was struggling with an old laptop running Windows 10. Everthing took an age to load, sometimes an eternity. Linux was an alternative, something I had never tried. I did some research, and decided to dual boot my machine with an Ubuntu install. Everything worked as intended and I was surprised at the smoothness and efficiency of both the new OS and the laptop performance. The fan no longer groaned under the weight of Windows; the machine was stealthy and quiet.
There were no more system hangs, no more blue screens of death. Ctrl+alt+del became a distant memory. I experimented with the terminal. I marveled at the power, efficiency and simplicity. I learned the basic commands and then began installing software from the apt repository. The file system was ingenious and the Linux OS was incredibly stable. Windows felt a like a poor relation, which locked the user into a proprietary system with little room for customization. Welcome to the brave new world of open source.
It was not all roses though. No matter what I did, I couldn't get my laptop trackpad to work with Ubuntu. I settled for an old USB plug in mouse. This was not a deal breaker as I never took the laptop on the road. I also never managed to get my printer scanner to work with Ubuntu. But these were small prices to pay. On the rare occasion that I needed the scanner, Windows could be reluctantly used.
As many others have said, this is the beauty of Linux. Not everything will work, all of the time. But today we have enourmous resources on the web, wikis, Stack Overflow and countless forums where questions can be posed and solutions found. It can be time consuming, but knowlege is power. With daily use, one can make incremental steps. The potential with a Linux system is truly limitless: with time, graft and imagination anything is possible.
