Planetarian Reverie: The World's Shortest Tear-Jerker

I have recently gotten back into Visual Novels. Among my entry back, one of the titles i decided to play was "Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet" on my Sony PSP. To say it was good would be an extreme understatement, as no visual novel (or kinetic in this case) has ever made me cry before.

Story

Planetarian is about a lonely traveler, sometime in the distant future. Upon walking through an empty city while dodging security drones and turrets, he comes across a little girl all by herself, who is acting quite strangely. The story follows your interactions with this girl, as she shows you around the Planetarium which has been housing her for her entire life. In this story, there are many key moments, lots of character development, and many emotional scenes, all in the span of about a 5 hour total read.

Gameplay

Well, it is a visual novel. All you do is press circle to continue reading text. You can also press triangle to get access to a small menu which contains a save button, the options sub-menu, and a place to remap the controls. I will note that this game was tremendously buggy toward the end, and crashed often. I had to take out both the UMD and the PSP's battery a few times in order to restart the console. This should not be an issue on the Steam version of the game.

Final Thoughts

Planetarian is the perfect visual novel for a beginner. It is short, delivers a truly amazing story, and the Steam version is pretty cheap at somewhere under 10 USD. This novel is certainly worth reading, whether you are brand new to the visual novel genre or are a seasoned veteran in the medium.
