Meeting in Tucson on Thursday Dec 9, 2021

6:30pm - 7:30pm MST

Contact(s): Sunrise Movement (team (at) sunrisemovement (point) org)

University of Arizona Democrats and Sunrise DC are organizing for DC Statehood—and we need one hour of help from folks across Arizona!

Over 700,000 DC residents, a majority of whom are Black and brown, don’t have voting representation in Congress because DC isn’t a state. This means they can’t elect representatives to take bold action on the climate crisis, racial justice, or other progressive policies like gun violence prevention and immigration reform. Native Washingtonians have been fighting for statehood for centuries, but it won’t just benefit DC residents. Statehood will also benefit Arizonans because they will have two additional allies in the Senate to build political power and help get their priorities passed. DC getting the representation it deserves will also go a long way in the fight for progressive policy change that will benefit the whole country!

Unfortunately, Arizona senators Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly still haven’t signed onto the bill to make DC a state or expressed support for the idea. We need Arizona residents to step up and demand that their representatives get on board now.

University of Arizona Young Democrats are partnering with Sunrise DC to host a one-hour action call for Arizonans where participants will be trained on the importance of DC statehood and given easy ways to make their voices heard by their senators, including making calls, sending emails, and participating in a social media campaign.

We hope to see you there!
