keyboards

arguably keyboard enthusiasts are nerds, crazy people. investing a _lot_ of cash into spare parts to build something that'll produce letters on a screen.

arguably the look and feel of a keyboard does make a difference. assuming that one spends a lot of time looking and modifying computer screens.

and so upon stumbling across someone at work who builds their own keebs (stupid slang words) showed me a selection of vaporwave and synthwave themed creations, i decided to have one.

now i have a keyboard. but i gave up along the way. i learned that you need a case, a pcb (the electronic board), a metal plate, switches and keycaps. keyboards exist in different sizes and different layouts, switches have different sockets and keycaps different widths. about 95% of the shop items you find are unavailable. the cool stuff are group buys, basically a kickstarter, that you'll have to wait months for. and the descriptions are gibberish. how anyone can figure out what fits where and why and how is a mystery.

i don't watch youtube. i don't want to spend time watching youtube to learn about 100 new words to figure out which group buys i need to do to be able to build a keyboard in a year... if nothing goes wrong that is.

instead i settled with a ducky one 2 mini pure white rgb and gateron brown switches and sakura michi key caps from some taiwanese company. lit up in a gradient from bright yellow across orange into purple, it's as close as it can get to vaporwave with semi-limited time invested.

i am happy.

and i'll keep my fingers crossed, that this keyboard will serve me another 5 to 10 years.

we'll have to see about that, won't we.
