Convincing People is Hard.

03-21-2016

Linux, linux, linux.

I’ve been dabbling around Linux for more than a month now and I personally, think that it is a vastly superior operating system compared to others and as such, I’ve tried my best to coerce my contemporaries into switching to it.

But none seemed to budge.

A lot of them tend to present these arguments whenever I talk about Linux in front of them and I will try to answer as much of it, as honestly as I can, right now.

The Game Argument

“Oh, I can’t install Linux because there aren’t a lot of games available for it.”

Well, there are a lot of games available for Linux, in Steam alone there are around 1300 games available for the Linux platform. It’s a lot and I reckon no one can even play that much. But, relatively speaking, in comparison to Windows. Games indeed are a lot less in Linux. But then again, that doesn’t mean that Linux is shit. The more people use it, the more developers will consider it. So just jump in.

The Complexity Argument

“Linux is so complicated. Whenever I look at you doing stuff at your computer you’re typing a lot of complicated codes just to make things work.”

You don’t need to. That’s the beauty of Linux. The only reason why I’m so hands on with my computer is that I purposefully made it that way. I’ve installed a distribution that doesn’t do all of the things automatically and in order to make things work, I really need to get my hands dirty. But as I said, you don’t need to. Linux is about choices and even the choice of fixing things yourself or leaving it to a troubleshooter is available for Linux.

So there’s that. Jump in to other side, the gap isn’t really that big. You’re just looking at a different angle.
