From Memories to Monuments and Loveless

Tue Oct 12 19:24:23 PST 2021

These are two albums that came into my life almost a year apart. Yet these two albums evoke a sense to serenity albeit achived through different means.

Odd's ``From Memories to Monuments'' is very clean and crisp, I'm almost tempted to say that it sounds typical from a Filipino rock band, though I do think that would be a disservice to Odd to describe their EP that way. Nonetheless, every piece of this EP evoked a sense of calm and serenity that was occasionally broken by brief spurts of chaos. For such a short EP, I never thought that it would be able to pack such a feeling and, honestly, I'm impressed by it. It's just a shame that Odd hasn't released anything other than that as of yet. But I'm looking positive at the direction that they're trying to push.

On the other hand, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless is a classic, the proto-shoegaze as they say. I first listened to this album when it was recommended to me by RateYourMusic's recommendation page. I was skeptical at first, since I'm not really sure whether I'm the type of person that would enjoy shoegaze. The first listen was tough, I was never exposed to that level of ``soundwall'' before and I'm almost tempted to throw the towel and shelf the album. But after a while, I learned to appreciate the subtle beauty of loveless. It is loud and chaotic yet at the same time serene and tranquil, amidst the chaos that is happening in every track of that piece there's this sense of calm that arrives only after you have listened to it a few times.
