I love the harp -- by that, for those not into this niche of the arts, I mean the harmonica. And in particular, the ten hole diatonic harmonica.
Anywho, and to get to the point, the harps that you can buy *always* require adjustments: tuning, adjusting the shape of the reeds, gapping the reeds, embossing the reed plates, waxing some (at least) of the reeds, etc.
I spend so much time learning how to do this, and actually doing it, that I seem to have no time for practice -- not to mention the money required to replace the harps I have ruined/destroyed while doing these things.
Bartender! A good Old Fashioned, please.
I've been carrying one with me everywhere for 15 years now. You never know when boredom hits and you have five minutes to kill all by yourself and there you have it!
I also have a chromatic harmonica but I never quite got into it. Plus it's so big my brain gets really confused.
It's amazing, the nuances you learn are associated with nearly any art or pursuit one cares to name. And if you aren't a practitioner, they can be completely opaque to you. The subtleties of tuning a harmonica is definitely one of the things I didn't expect to learn about today :-)
