I've found that often when I have deadlines coming up or a lot of work to do, I happen to find a very engaging story. I feel like this is not entirely a coincidence - maybe partly procrastination and partly stress relief.
Currently I'm sucked in to "Tower of Somnus", a science fiction story written (in the past month or so) by someone named CoCop. Set in a dystopian world with evil megacorps, cyberpunky gangs and a magical multi-player VR game provided by aliens, there's a lot going on. Like all good SF it comments on humanity, with a notable theme being trust. I particularly like the author's use of the virtual game world in this regard: humans interacting with other species within the game allow some ideas to be brought up in a very direct manner without the story being strained.
What prompted this post is that I came across "Tower of Somnus" in an author's note at the end of a chapter of "The Perfect Run" (another dystopian/magic powers based story), and the bad(?) timing got me thinking about how this has happened before.
You can read both of the stories I've mentioned on the WWW:
I think I'll get back to reading now :-)
