Cool in the house, verging on cold, so we sat on the front steps and had our salad sandwiches while watching and listening to the world go by. Not much wildlife visible, but an almost constant background of sounds to be picked out
Over the course of half an hour the first half was taken up by a blackbird[1] singing away, probably around in the back garden or up on the neighbour's roof. At some point it faded away and was replaced by the constant cooing of a pair of Spotted doves[2] in the street tree, again in the neighbour's garden. At last, a native bird can be heard, a pair of Magpies[3] warble quietly to each other from the gum trees along the railway line and park, and looking over that way I can see half a dozen Common mynas[4] flying up to the powerlines as something disturbs them from the ground.
Finishing up lunch, as I was coming back inside and taking a last look around, three or four Rainbow lorikeets[5] called out from the big leafy trees across the street and a single Red wattlebird[6] rocketed past heading for the callistemon, still in flower and still popular with the nectar feeders
