2021/0424/1500 -- pests

Up early this morning and out for a bike ride before breakfast, I thought I'd be writing something about the birds I heard and saw, but then after lunch we went out for a family walk along the creek to the local wetlands -- Huntingdale wetlands -- and I knew what today's wildlife would have to be.

There's a point along the Scotchman's creek trail where it turns 90° right and climbs steeply from creek level up to cross a minor road, and between the path and road is a metre wide garden bed planted with big tussocky native plants. At the base of one of the tussocks and frighteningly, almost at eye level as we walked up the ramp, there was a hole about 5cm in diameter and an endless stream of European wasps[1] streaming in and out and buzzing around the path. One of the few things that I'm quite scared of, a couple of individual was stings as a kid -- thankfully from solitary native wasps -- I can't imagine a disturbed nest of these pests attacking someone. We cautiously walked past on the far side of the path and I reported the nest to the council, hopefully for destruction early next week.
