An afternoon ride down to the bay, lots of noise and traffic and a road with a lousy half-hearted bike lane and poorly behaved drivers, so not much time to take any notice of the birdlife. Down through St Kilda and Elwood and finally get to slow down and look around as I approached the Elwood canal -- such a lovely name for what at times is a very stinky mud-filled drain. I think if I'd stumbled across it between the ages of about ten and fifteen I'd have loved the place, all mud and shallow water and fish, insects & birdlife. Today almost all I can see are the huge schools of toadfish[1] and smaller schools of some other fish that I can't identify.
