Join the online family quiz to support Cork's vital Air Ambulance service tonight

03 Dec

A fun, online family quiz will be live from 8pm tonight - and everybody is invited to help support the crucial work of the Cork Based Irish Community Air Ambulance. The quiz will be hosted by the Cork Ladies Gaelic Football Association - in recognition of the fact that the ambulance has helped communities across the Rebel County, and uses Bishopstown GAA pitch as its landing pad for CUH. The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) is Ireland’s only charity-funded Air Ambulance. It responds to serious incidents and medical emergencies every day of the year, including Christmas Day, from its base in Rathcoole, Co. Cork. Each helicopter mission costs an average of €3,500, all of which has to be raised or donated. One in five calls during 2021 has been to cardiac arrests, followed by road traffic collisions and farming incidents. Cork accounts for more than a third of all incidents (37%), followed by Kerry with 23%. Marie Casey, Principal of Boherbue National School has organised the family quiz and says she knows the people of Cork want to support these highly skilled frontline workers. "I recently attended a Ladies Football Final at Bishopstown GAA Club and while I was there the Irish Community Air Ambulance landed on the grounds of the GAA club," said Marie. "I was told by a member of the Club executive that this was the 6th time the Air Ambulance had landed in Bishopstown GAA grounds that week. "I was amazed to learn that Cork University hospital hasn't a landing area and patients are ferried from the Bishopstown GAA club to the hospital." "The Air Ambulance provides a hugely important and essential service for people in the Cork area and it needs funding to ensure this service remains in place. Many lives have been saved thanks to the Air Ambulance service." She added, "There are many wonderful prizes up for grabs in this quiz. I would be grateful if as many families as possible can support the quiz and raise money for the Air Ambulance service." Family tickets are €20 and can be purchased here. .
