Gday Replying too :- [Off Topic] Discussing how to have communities without going back to something http/s based (easrng)
Time to bring back usage of older protcols - FTP - Newsgroups - Zip/rar/ file.diz / readme.txt
- Podcasts saved in mp3/ogg/vorbis which are downloaded via wget
- Pictures batch downloaded (doesnt comic formats do this?)
- Recipies and non drm e-books downloaded
Migration away from Mainstream/cloud/public dns using tor, opennic, non standard IP/DNS services
Can any of the Gemini Client support using - wget - youtube-dl - claws-mail - gftp - p7zip/unrar from links on gemini pages ?
Does anyone support migrating away from Corporation and goverment DNS mainstream over to OpenNic only or Gemini having its own DNSNIC system that you can opt into/sign up with? do we have to limit our commications to standard http domains/dns systems ?
One cool thing to do would be get the person to leave a comment by - typing a text file, it being compressed, then emailed to gemini person via a script - eg load nano/xed/leafpad (or gemini client text box) type in 1 page or 1 paragraph of text , save as text file, X text file compressed, X file then emailed to X
or voice comment - load arecord for 2 minutes to record voice feedback, compress from wav to vorbis, email that vorbis file
By using email via pop3/smtp/etc and non standard DNS your migrating away from people using free emails such as protonmail/hotmail/gmail/etc
Could Gemini be adapted to work with BBS software ? Or bbs software adapted to work with Gemini Ive been seeing some traction with small niche communities going back to telnet bbs's for commications and disussion without the censorship online via http/https

Nitter could be ported to Gemini, there are server libs for nim
, diffrent discourse forums,
Enable mailing list mode and you can use Discourse through email
older pho based forums (most notesbly brass goggles.) And on and on..
Brass Goggles appears to have Tapatalk support (http://brassgoggles.co.uk/
forum/mobiquo/mobiquo.php) so it's possible to make a non-web viewer.
Which has left me pondering how 'we' would handle communities, or even if
'we' should.
There is as far as I am aware, without going to http/s:
- Mailing lists. (... snip ...)
- BBS; (... snip ...)
There's also NNTP/Usenet. IIRC groups can be hosted on their own server or
as part of the actual Usenet network.

I suppose not a whole heck of a lot to write home about. I'm not a
technically gifted person. Just an oppinionated one. It took me some time
to figure out how to post content as the web frontend is a bit... Odd and I
hadn't at first seen that there is SFTP access. With that sorted I've been
having a far simpler time importing and updating content. I am sure i could
do far better and more by figuring out how to get my FTP clients to
autosynch local folders across instead of doing it manually, but given the
minimal nature of things and my current gift of free time it feels somewhat
appropriate.
Also it amuses me given how much is on that capsule could fit uncompressed
on a 1.44Mb floppy with a pretty decent bit of room left to spare.
Compressed? Well. Text compresses pretty darn well.
If anyone has any suggestions I would welcome the feedback. Lord alone
knows i've probably made a fair share of obvious mistakes that will need
addressing.

A new working group is currently under discussion at IETF, the
Oblivious HTTP group. The idea is to prevent the HTTP server to see
the source IP address (the address of the client). Temporary charter
is at https://datatracker.ietf.org/wg/ohttp/about/.
This may be interesting for Gemini since, while Gemini removes many of
the information sent by the client (cookies, headers), the IP address
is still there. Of course, there is Tor, but the "Oblivious HTTP"
solution may be more efficient in speed.

Hi everyone,
there is a security vulnerability in all Agate versions prior to 3.1.0, which has been discovered by Matthew Ingwersen.
It has been fixed in the new version which is available on crates.io, prebuilt binaries are also available: https://qwertqwefsday.eu/agate/v3.1.0/ or https://github.com/mbrubeck/agate/releases/tag/v3.1.0
Percent-encoded slashes were misunderstood, possibly allowing arbitrary files to be accessed. This can be an issue depending on with which permissions and/or user you are running the server. Therefore an update is highly recommended.
