me and raspberry pi zero

some intro

i bought my raspberry pi zero 3 years ago. the only reason i choose zero is because it is cheap. heck, my basic zero model don't even have built in wireless.

how i use it

initially, i hooked the zero to my tv, and use it mainly to play movies from pendrives. thats it, who would use such a limited hardware as their everyday pc? gee...

my source of reference

a guy wrote this very detailed blog on how he use raspberry pi zero as a everyday machine. this article inspired me to use my pi zero as a ultra low powered computer. it can be powered by my 10,000mah powerbank for many hours. Below is the link to the article:

my setup

as for my setup, initially i tried dietpi. it indeed is very fast and use fewer resources. however on the dietpi image i was unable to get the video and 3d acceleration to work. as i would want to watch movies, and let my son play minecraft (pi-edition) on this board, eventually i installed raspberry pi os lite version, together with libreoffice, amfora gemini client, and lynx mainly for gopher. for daily internet surfing, i use links2 in graphic mode. i tried chromium, both with dietpi and raspberry pi os, chromium is usable on dietpi, but not on raspberry pi os, chromium is just too heavy for this tiny single core board. last but not least, omxplayer as the main media player. one thing to take note though, it is best if you use a powered usb hub.

final thought

does it sucks? definitely no. instead it is quite fun to use. you just need to learn to manage the limiting resources you have. believe me, we can always do more with less.

well, thats it for today. stay safe and stay healthy.
