I've been feeling frustrated and sad about the state of the web. And have thought about why that is the case, though i'm not quite sure still.
This looks like a really cool tool/ way to communicate with other humans, without the noise of the normal net.
Private enough that I feel secure in actually speaking my mind, and yet public enough that the people that want to, will find it.
Also Gemini is the first "alt" protocol I've heard of. Gopher might be better, but I'm not moving as of now. To me, the point of the protocol is not techincal superiority anyway.
The point to me is the inability to be hijacked by corperate intrests. A combination of the 'mainstream' or 'plebian' users coming to the internet. Then big american orgs getting their hands on comunities and slowly farming them for advertisement money.
I hate that youtubers aren't just "guys/gals making cool videos" anymore. Everyone is an influencer now. I don't know what they're trying to achive? Is it some perverion of trying to maximize likes on posts?
I can see why some people would get sucked into that feedback loop. But this content is drowning out genuine cool people.
The signal to noise ratio problem still isn't figured out. Populairty used to be a reasonable way to gauge what is good or not. Tough since we've tried to create systems to exploit that feature seems to be broken.
Some companies are trying to use AI to create a profile of you, based on your browsing history.
