Today my wife and I saw a movie in theaters for the first time since 2019. We watched the Disney animated film "Encanto", which was quite enjoyable, my misgivings about Disney as a company notwithstanding.
Even before the pandemic, I've always preferred to see movies in a theater. I've written before about intentionality and effort being part of the reward, and theaters are no different: I feel a film is more special and more demanding of my attention if I pay money to go to a dedicated building, sit down in a large auditorium, and immerse myself in the story's world.
When we watch movies at home, the screen is small, the kitchen and bathroom are a short walk away, the distractions of the smartphone are always within arm's reach, and there's a pause button that makes my time investment risk-free. It's more difficult for me to lose myself in the fiction and let the rest of the world go for a few hours if I hardly remove myself from the rest of the world.
Tomorrow we'll be going back to see the Wes Anderson flick "The French Dispatch". I love Wes Anderson films, and I'm very excited to watch this film in the cinema. It'll be a more captivating experience than simply buying a Blu-Ray disc.
