Lovely rainy day. Got a bike yo.
Didnt cause an incident today so that was cool. The leaves
of the oak trees have all turned a lovely hue of orange.
Around 7pm I took the Blazer out to pick up a bookshelf.
When I turned it on the gas gauge was on empty. Luckily
it wasn't totally empty but I stopped for gas anyway. The
pump at the station was incredibly slow so I started
talking to the group of high schoolers on the other side of
the pump. They'd just gotten their shitty used car and had
the opposite problem-- the gauge said full when it was
actually empty. The DJ at KDVS was playing some jazz but
sliced in a couple breakbeat-type tunes. I called in on my
way home and said hey to the DJ. Now that I have their
number I'll probably call in more if just to thank them for
playing something interesting on the FM band.
This morning marked the end of a 4-day long incident that I
caused but was pretty unsurprising given the history of the
system. I did my best to lead the remediation of a system
that I had zero familiarity with and fought through 16 hour
days to the point that I was forcibly asked to sign off.
But this morning, the db rebuild was complete and I was
able to go on a guided hike of Hirschman Pond in Nevada
City. Y and I had been there before in 2020 but it was a
bone dry summer that year and not nearly so full of life as
it was today. It was a large group that gathered to listen
to what the former-schoolteacher-cum-BYLT-volunteer had to
say about the area's wildlife and history. I didn't learn
a ton, but I enjoyed a couple conversations with others--
a 50-something year old former carpenter with a missing
ring finger who was finding a new start in the mechatronics
program at Sierra college-- and an older couple who just
moved to Nevada City from San Jose to be closer to their
adult children in Sacramento but not too close. I hit up
Tiger Alley for records and then a couple of thrift stores
in search of a footspa that could be used to develop film.
Eventually I found a kind of sous vide/water cooker thing
with variable temperature control. I'll find out tomorrow
if that will work. Spent a bit of time working on the rock
wall and a lot of time reading Sucker's Progress and
sleeeping.
Still waking up bright and early to make sure there was
no remaining work to deal with, I got started on the 35mm
processing, mixed the Cinefilm chemicals and loaded the
patterson containers. I put a bucket in my sink, heated
water in the sous vide, got the chemical jars to the
right temperature (guided by a shitty aquarium thermometer)
and basically this was way better than trying to get
everything right in a bathtub in my Oakland apartment.
Y and I went to downtown GV to get a copy of the board game
Wingspan as well as some groceries. I'm just blown away by
how these photos came out. Note to self: 1000ml makes
batches of 4 pretty solid, evaporate the mixed chemicals,
dispose of once condensed.
