Terminal-based pair development setting

Jan 3rd, 2021

About to start pairing w/ a friend on some development. One is more

emacsi-ish, the other more vim-ish (after ~20 years of emacs). We settled

on using spacemacs with a common theme. Much heavier than vim but ok.

Quite easy to switch keyboard mode from emacs-like to vim-like.

To share our screen, we are keeping it low bandwidth low tech with tmate.

After tinkering with both tmate and tmux w/ shared session, the tmate

option is so much easier to setup and do not need to open the firewall on

any side.

The first test w/ tmate was below 75kb/s of network traffic at peak while

being really fluid for both of us. Today I have set up a tmate-ssh-server

on a vps.

Together with a mumble, it will not be as great as seating next to the

other, but we are ready for some pair development sessions. :)

Three external links, three web links... not really gemini friendly. :(
