2021/1111/1630 — magpies

My daily ride went out on a slightly different path today; up along Scotchmans creek to Mount Waverley, but the continuing on and north through Glen Waverley then back towards the city alongside the railway, eventually rejoining Gardiners creek and places more often visited. Varying habitat along the ride, along Scotchmans creek is fairly dense bushland, endless Noisy miner[1] & Rainbow lorikeet[2] calls and sightings over everything else. Once up at the Glen Waverley railway line its far more open parkland with a few bigger trees, coming down the bikepath towards the underpass of one of the roads I could hear the warblings of some magpies[3], but was astounded when I looked across the rails and saw them all perched in a half-dead tree, probably 15-20 or more. I usually think of them as more solitary birds, or at most to be in small family groups — the tree was full of them, everything from fully grown black and white adults to more mottled grey fledglings. At least all they were doing was singing, none of them tried to swoop me!
