A sunny day, a leisurely afternoon ride after a long ride yesterday, past the Gardiners creek wetlands in Ashwood with all kinds of frogs creaking and croaking. Up to the Anniversary trail, passing only three crested pigeons[1] at the pigeon patch in Markum reserve, then down hill along the Ferndale track under shrieking Rainbow lorikeets[2] and Noisy miners[3]. Back on the Gardiners Creek trail, upstream to the Glen Iris wetlands and pause for a look around, a flash of colour & texture caught my eye and I realised there was a Nankeen night-heron[4] perched on a low branch about 3m from one of the council benches, only 30cm or so above the water! Watched it for a while then rode around the ponds, coming back to find a couple who also ended up watching it — although the woman did ask if it was a kookaburra! While we stood there we then saw a long-necked turtle[5] swimming around — first one since last summer.
