2021/1011/1630 — karkarook lake

Sunny skies but a cold southerly blowing as I went out for the afternoon's bike ride, down south to Karkarook lake, around the lake and then follow the gravel path down to Heatherton and back around the parkland and vacant land.

On the way down past the golf course I'd startled up a pair of Eastern rosellas[7] sitting on the ground eating a discarded piece of apple, I often seem to see them from about a suburb south of home down towards the lake

On the lake a pair of Black swans[1] and half a dozen cygnets foraging under a pier while people fished from above them, this seems to be the closest body of water I can get to that has them, everywhere else is only ducks and waterfowl. A selection of cormorants, pied & black, but I'm not sure at the distance whether large or small. Coots and moorhens too, but I'm fed up with them, seem to see them everywhere. Down along the north-south gravel road there are always dozens of small birds, today in with the sparrows[2], starlings[3] and mynas[4] was a small flock of goldfinch[5] and hopping around on the path in front of me, half a dozen blue wrens[6] — voted the Australian Bird of the year sometime in the past week — colourful and chirpy, but on the decline in suburbia due to cats & being driven out by noise & more boisterous birds. There was a yellow-green honeyeater perched on a branch at one spot, I couldn't get a good look at it as I passed, perhaps an ID sometime in the future.
