First magpie[1] swoop of the year, and later a magpie in the garden. Neither event completely unexpected.
Out on my daily ride this afternoon and I'd sprinted up from the roundabout to try and catch the driver of a ute who'd gone past with his cargo door wide open and threatening to lose all his tools — just caught him at the corner and received effusive thanks and a large hug. As a result of this I was up at the corner of Atherton and Warrigal roads infront of the police station, the police station with a large gum tree and two large bunyas out the front. As I rode off there was the sudden unexpected WOOSH! of close passing wings, and two or three followup swoops until I was safely out of range.
Later in the afternoon sitting around at home and I looked out the front window to see a magpie strutting around on the lawn, digging into the grass, poking for worms. We often hear them and see them up on the power lines or tree branches, but I don't often see them down on the ground here, probably due to the cats. Such a shame that I can't convince this one that we're really nice people and to let all his mates know not to swoop me!
