I'd ridden through the Huntingdale wetlands this afternoon and was thinking of writing about the sights and sounds of the usual suspects... but hadn't got around to it yet. Then while cooking dinner I needed to go down to the bottom of the garden to fetch some parsley. Moonless night tonight and pitch black in the garden and as I got level with the shed there was a rustling and clatteringing from above in the branches, followed by a thump onto the roof of the shed and the silhouette of a large well-fed Brush-tailed possum[1] hurriedly making its way across the roof, onto the fence, and off through the neighbour's garden. Our plum tree has started sprouting leaves in the last week or so and they seem to be irresistable to the possums, they eat the fruit in late summer and autumn and all the young shoots in spring, along with destroying roses and depending on their tastes, just about any other fresh greenery they come across. The other part of it is that the path around the shed is piled high with fresh possum poo, that part of the garden has started to smell like an animal enclosure at the zoo.
