2021/0624/1700 — zoo day

Off to the zoo today as a school holiday activity to keep number one son occupied, and because I haven't been for ages. Far too much non-wild wildlife there to write about, but due to the size of the site and the amount of vegetation its a popular spot with the native birds as well. Judging by the warning signs to staff on the gates it's also a popular spot with the wild foxes[1] and they have to be carefull to ensure that they keep them out!

As we walked around there was the constant loud "bing!" call from a colony of Bell miners[2] that live in the gum trees, more often heard than seen they're a more attractive yellowy-green honeyeater and we did get to see four or five of them fluttering down to wash & splash in one of the ponds before vanishing back up into the tree tops.

The other wild wildlife was a surprise to me; a pair of fearless Night herons stalking around the tables at the café, acting more like seagulls or pigeons and hunting for scraps on the ground. I'm used to them as a shy, rarely seen, bird, glimpsed off in the reeds on the far side of a pond.
