Riding to work on a slightly different route to normal, cutting through some sidestreets of Oakleigh East. It's grey and overcast and the air feels very damp. On one side of the road, on my left, there's a small flock of a dozen magpie[1]s warbling and calling from their perches in the bushes and on the lawn. On the other side of the road on my right an equal sized flock of Pied currawongs[2] is perched in some low trees. Are they calling to each other, or do they ignore each other? The sound of both birds seems to suit the damp cold morning air.
