The Swift parrots[1] have been around a lot in my social media mentions over the past week or two; all the eucalypts are flowering and the birds have migrated across from Tasmania to the mainland. There's a small flock of them up around Fawkner north of the CBD, an amazing number reported from a sighting in a park in the ACT. Riding to work and then out for a walk at lunchtime all I can hear is screechings from the tree tops, but looking up shows me nothing but endless shrieking Rainbow lorikeets[2], Noisy miners[3] and wattlebirds — Red wattlebirds[4] I think. A hazardous business too, I've nearly walked into trees half a dozen times by looking up and not watching where I'm going. Maybe one day I'll spot some, I suspect I may have seen them previously without realising!
