Stretching the rules just a tiny bit today... not quite wildlife seen so much as wildlife catered for. A somewhat odd community engagement project from Monash Council had them send us a kit of a parrot nesting box that we have to put together, then take back to the council office where it will be taken away to be put up in a park somewhere within the council area. From a cost perspective it would have to be ridiculous, driving around to deliver individual kits to dozens of homes, then having each one driven back to the office, handing the entire lot to one of the Mens' sheds or community groups to whack together in an afternoon would make a lot more sense. Apparently we will get an email to tell us which park "our" nest box is in.
Amusingly, the sheet of instructions includes an initial paragraph explaining how they're intended to entice smaller parrots to nest; "such as the Musk lorikeet[1] and Red-Rumped parrots[2], and endangered Swift Parrots[3]" ... I hope someone mentions to them that the Swifties nest in Tasmania and only come to the mainland in winter to feed!
