That's more like it! Warm, sunny, no wind, a near perfect spring day for an escape from the office and walk across campus and around to the lake. Unfortunately the entire lake is ringed by work crews and machinery as all the paths are being dug out to be replaced by new paths so its noisy, dusty and mostly closed off. A detour further around to the walkway over the Jock Marshall reserve and I could stand and watch what was going on in the wetlands below me.
A pair of the little Australasian_grebes[1] were paddling, alternating between diving for food and frantically chasing each other across the water and into the rushes... at least I'm fairly sure it was only a pair, they spend so much time under water or behind the reeds that there might have been a third on there. A solitary Eastern rosella[2] flew overhead calling as it dissappeared into a tree canopy, a pleasant change from the ubiquitous Noisy miners[3] doing their thing.
Floating around below me was one of the big turtles that lives in the pond, and over near the bank a smaller one, only about 20cm across. Fairly sure they're Eastern long necks[2], but I could be just guessing here. Enjoyable to stand there and watch as the big one paddled about, sunning itself and occasionaly diving away if I moved suddenly
