I got an itch to write a response to a Mastodon toot that was aimed at me
and the whole of Fosstodon. The instance I chose to call home for my
tooting needs (lol). The response I got was a generalized assumption of
all people on Fosstodon, like if I represent anyone other than myself. My
personal experience from Fosstodon has shaped my perspective of the
instance and honestly, I think my experience proves to be correct in this
case. Fosstodon boasts a wide array of characters; Christians, Atheists,
Republicans, Democrats, Anarchism, Independents, Undecided, Conservatives,
Hindu, Buddhism, Libertarians and probably others I am missing. Sure
disagreements happen but I've not seen any of them blow out of proportion
and become nasty or hateful. They tend to stay pretty civil. To generalize
an entire server off of one person or interaction is normally not an
accurate representation of that server and displays ignorance.
So, on the topic of people not knowing when to shutup is debatable for one
reason, social media. Welcome to the all encompassing and freely
browsable/accessible social interactions of the Fediverse; where people
come to be social/toot. If one wants conversations to remain between
select individuals then I recommend you utilize another method of
communication. Perhaps email, texting, phone calls, zoom conference's to
name a few. If you want to shout your ideas or thoughts into the Internet
then I suggest a blog, or a dairy if you want to be private. To be on a
open and federated social media and to declare no one interact with you is
like being in a high-school hallway with a "kick me" sign on your back,
it's going to happen.
Phew! With all that said, I'd like to thank the person for amusing me with
their inability to chat with another human whom may have differing views.
