Hello Gemini! Just yesterday, I found myself exploring the Gemini-verse for the first time. What a cool little world you guys have here. The simplicity of everything is super refreshing. You can sense the feeling of authenticity and intentionality here in both the content and the software built. A small world built by enthusiasts. I'm not old enough to know what the web was like in the early days, but I imagined it was something similar to what Gemini is right now.
I was also pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to get a Gemini server going. Only a few commands and I am already up and running. I guess the next step after writing this is shooting someone an email to let the world know that this server exists. Don't want to just be shouting into the void.
Let me introduce myself. My name is joey. I love to read and write, tinker with computers/software, take long walks and to spend time with my wonderful wife :) I work as a software developer using Microsoft tools (Visual Studio, Windows Forms, TFS). Yuck. Although I was always interested in computers and video games, I didn't learn to code until about my sophomore year of college. I can still remember that sense of awe I felt when I made that first "Hello World" program in my CS2010 class. It was awesome. I felt that same awe last night while exploring around here, so of course I had to spin something up to join in on the fun.
What is so appealing to me is the smallness of everything here. Most of my computing at home and at work deals with large systems where it is difficult to know what is going on in the background. The idea of using a protocol that claims a client can be implemented over the weekend is fascinating. The transparency of it all is exciting. It aims to put power back in the hands of users. I think this is what stuck me the most and what drove me to spin up a sever for Gemini on a whim.
I'm not quite sure how to close this, it's already a little scattered. I guess the point I want to end on is that I want to help contribute to Gemini. I want to help make this cool little corner of the internet a better place. Sharing my experiences is a good way to do so. I'm looking forward to meeting new folks and learning from you :)
