Is it just me or is anybody else also reminded of "The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral mind" while reading this ?

I have a hunch that ancient peoples could not conceive of a state of clinical depression. That comes along with the modern emphasis on "me" and "my goals" and "my desires"

As Soren Kierkegaard put it "Anxiety is the price of freedom"

Thanks for the mention of julian jaynes' book, never heard of it before, seems like quite an interesting read.

Slate Star Codex has a really great review of it, if you want to get a more in-depth idea of it before actually reading it:

Still in the midst of reading it and it's been fascinating from the get go. Thanks for the link.

There is also Bernstein's course (better start with his Kant tapes though).
