Today in Seth Godin's daily blog he talks about the power of making small adjustments.
When we begin to think about our work, we tend to focus on the largest structures–what it looks like from the outside. But as we engage with the problem at hand, it turns out that our impact changes based on how we stand, what we believe and the ways we interact with the systems right in front of us.
Get the strategy right, then implement small changes, repeated with persistence and generosity.
I have noticed over the years that the company I work for tended to think of broad sweeping changes to solve problems. They said we need to overhaul, rethink, etc., and it always rubbed me the wrong way. I think by `throwing it all away' and starting over you tend to miss the good progress you have already made.
I was on one really good team where the focus was clear actions, accountability, and above all, people. When I was on that team, things were going well because we had a good leader on that team. One of the mottos, schticks or what have you we often repeated on that team was 'small changes.' The point was to trust your peers and make small changes that will have an overall impact in the long run rather than going with the mentality of tearing it all down.
Sadly, the director of that team left to another company and half my peers got laid off and the rest of us tumbled and went to do separate things in the company, but of course I took what I learned and put it into practice where I am today.
