I've been wanting to keep a journal for a while now. Not for the big things specifically, but mostly for the little things that get easily forgotten.
The narrative might change from time to time too. Sometimes these Gemlogs will be directed at my son and sometimes they will be narrated like any other blog, as if I'm speaking to an audience.
How am I going to format this log? When writing something for someone to read in 20 years I found simplicity was the solution for avoiding future legacy format issues.
GMI:
I Decided to do daily entries in GMI format. Mainly because it looks better. Once done, I'll copy it into a monthly txt file.
TXT:
Text files were an obvious choice due to their portability and their resistance to time. I can use a text file on any computer made today and mostly any computer from the past. The only tricky part is where to put line breaks. I ultimately chose to keep things within a 40 - 60 line range due to smaller screens being more prevalent.
DATE:
I decided to make the files monthly and just add to each months file daily. The dating scheme will look like this..
I think having the Year first, followed by the numeric month, then the written month, will be best for keeping things in order in any file manager. Adding the written month at the end just makes things pop a bit more when visually searching through things.
