First Post - First Impressions
----------------------------------

This is the very first post to my phlog. I've just spent hours reading
various phlogs. My first experience with Gopher was many years ago
where I read this long article about it, called The Rise and Fall of
the Gopher Protocol[1]. I was intrigued by it, so I found the Overbite
page and installed the OverbiteFF plugin for Firefox. I did some
exploration but not much, and ended up not exploring any more. My
first impressions of it at that time were that it was mostly for
sharing files and research - and I didn't have a job that required
those things, so I thought it wasn't for me. At this time, I didn't
know anything about phlogs or the communities behind them as I didn't
explore far enough.

I've only just recently, within the past day, started exploring more
on the Gopherspere, which led me to these various phlogs from SDF,
Circumlunar, and

There's something very unique about the phlog posts I've read so far.
Firstly, I've noticed that there are many very good writers on here -
I was particularly entranced by moji's post on swimming[2]. The next
thing that I noticed was that the content within these phlogs seem
richer - I suppose that comes from the fact that you can't rely on
anything other than text and words here. But, one of the most
interesting things that I've noticed is how people reference and
respond to each other's phlog posts. I've never seen anything like
this before - not even on Medium, which is supposed to make that more
accessible to do. I find it odd that here, where there isn't
necessarily comments and there's a greater division between each
person's gopherhole, it seems there's more of a community and a sense
that phlogers read each other's posts than on websites that have
comments, responses, related posts system, etc.

So, I decided to make my own gopherhole (I hope I'm using that term
correctly) and I intend to continue to make blog posts (I already have
a few ideas). You can find more about me on my about page[3].
