Bestiary

A Classification of the Manifestation-Born of the Ketaxil Peninsula.

Even (or especially) in times of turmoil, curious minds seek to understand the world around them. There follows documentation on the new species found within the region known as the Ketaxil Peninsula, and speculation on what roams beyond. Some are benign, some are threats, and others are unknowable, but all share common traits.

Properties

Following the immediate chaos of the Manifestation, several traits of the new creatures became apparent.

A creature is derived from nature. All creatures born of the Manifestation take at least some traits from living things, mostly animals but occasionally plants or fungi. Most Beast Class species are immediately recognisable as derived forms of natural beings. Others, particuarly Phenomonon Class entities, may stretch their origins further, but ultimately retain some tie to the natural world, weak though it may be. Inanimate objects or entirely abstract forms are absent.
A creature is not human. No humanoid forms are known to exist. No creature can talk, or display human level intelligence. Although Myth Class entities appear to have understandings that we do not, even their intelligence is of a different order.
A creature is part of the world around it. No matter how abstract, all creatures of the Manifestation are ultimately living beings. They are born, live, and die. Beast Class entities live their lives much as their progenitors did, while even Phenomenon Class creatures must find sustenance of some kind and are ultimately a part of the web of life that encompasses all things. They do not take part in human affairs, and that is what makes them so dangerous, for those humans that become bonded to them ultimately slip away themselves.

The Three Classes

Many people have sought to group and classify the creatures that roam across the face of Sena. The most common system divides them into three broad types: Beast, Phenomenon, and Myth.

Beast Class

Beast class creatures are those that resemble and behave like actual animals. They may look similar to normal species, or a jumble of different features, but they all act like normal animals (or rarely plants or fungi) in terms of feeding, reproducing, etc. Beast class creatures are often subdivided based on their resemblance or lack thereof to regular animals. This is the largest class and the one whose members most people are familiar with.

Phenomenon Class

Phenomenon class creatures are a diverse lot, and some debate exists over where the Beast class ends and this class begins. What is generally agreed upon is that the Phenomenon class encompasses those creatures that do not conform to basic biology as regular animals do. Many do not rely on food, or reproduce in unusual ways. For all their unusual traits, however, most Phenomenon creatures still resemble living things of some kind - mostly animals, though a few plants and fungi exist with the usual muddied classifications.

Myth Class

The rarest of all creatures are those that belong inside the Myth class. The name is slightly misleading as many of these creatures have been seen and can be considered to exist, but in terms of describing their power or elusiveness, it is very apt. Most verified Myth creatures are immensely powerful beings that keep their distance from humanity, often acting as guardians of certain places. They have rarely if ever been seen in groups, and it is thought that they are unique beings whose very biology is entirely unlike that of other living things.
