The Art of Losing

The Art of Losing

I received my agenda for 2021 the other day and after looking through it (very chuffed), I put it aside. Then I came across an entry in my current agenda which prompted me to add several early events to next year's calendar; it was only as I was adding these, was I stuck by the rain-falling-on-windshield-sadness of them.

I went through the agenda and added the anniversary of deaths of those I knew or who were close to my friends. I do this so I can remember to be especially kind and reach out when the anniversary nears.

A husband, an aunt, a wife. A sister and a daughter.

Realizing my agenda had become a prophecy of future grief, I quickly went through and added wedding anniversaries and nice life events (graduations and jobs and volunteering), but the damage had been done.

It seems true that [the art of losing isn’t hard to master.](https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/47536/one-art)

PS I have a project I would live to live in midnight's networked writing conceit. Does anyone have a quickguide to linking, posts and formatting? I have tried some things before but they got messed up D: thx in advx

From the Entrance I've never seen so many people in here! From a cozy back-alley pub to a bustling little establishment. I'd like to thank everybody for not taking my spot in the corner ;)

With all these new people I should start taking notes so that I can interact a little more deeply with everyone. I'll give each of you a dedicated markdown file in my knowledge base git repo, which, in all honesty, has...yet to exist. But the intention is there!

So, um, awkward question, @bartender: is there a seating capacity for this establishment? I'm curious about your future plans for The Midnight. Pinky promise you won't sell out to the chain-pub megacorps?

Hello anyone and everyone everywhere! :)

Quite a few new patrons here, so hello to you all! :D Glad you wandered down the street to find The Midnight tucked away in this corner of the WWW! Hope to see many of you around :)

Quick update - the AudioTechnica headphones arrive today, gonna be epic to use them with the tube amp. Something I have been looking forward to for a long time. I also drank like 5000 mgs of caffeine this morning (a Diet Pepsi + espresso, because I am an unhealthy vegetarian) so I am *wired*! But that's ok.

Thank you, @kit for the music recommendations, I will explore them at some point today on YouTube Music, and hope I enjoy. I love finding new music!

I've been babbling on my blog for two days about music-related stuff, and there's is a high likelihood that I will be receiving a receiver (lol) for my birthday this November, so that's pretty cool.

I hope everyone is doing well and taking care

Cheers!

Hello! I've just joined, and I'm looking forward to getting to know you all! I'm from India, I work as a software developer (mostly using Rails) and in my spare times I play PC games (my favourites include Dark Souls and Hollow Knight) and watch Anime. I also know Japanese, and am JLPT N2 certified; I put that to use some times in translating Light Novels. I'm here because I thought the concept was really cool, and I wanted to explore it more and find interesting people here. Cheers!

Whoah, I leave for a day and a half and now we've got a couple new patrons. Welcome, everybody.

This week has a lot on the agenda for school, so I've been chipping away at it while making a focused effort to get my workouts in every day also. A bit of halway-self-imposed crucible for me. So I probably won't be here all that much.

I went to Ikea a few days ago for the first time with my boyfriend. We just walked around, looking at furniture, and then grabbed some 75-cent hot dogs at the end. It was pleasant. I'm not too big of a fan of the modernist furniture style, but some of what they had appealed to me. It was also pretty relaxing, something I don't feel often.

Making the Time To Read

I'm in a little writing group that started a book club pre-pandemic. Once the shit hit the fan we postponed the books and it looked like it was going to fizzle out. This month we decided to resurrect the practice but this time with short stories each week. Soemthing we could actually commit to without a huge time commitment as we are all working and writing at the same time.

I figure most book clubs aren't comprized of writers. The writing takes up reading time to an extent. Short stories are a perfect middle ground to get in the reading hours while writing. This weeks is Mishima's Acts of Worship so I'm sitting out here in the quiet reading the short titled Tabako which has been translated to Cigarette in this collection.

I'll let yall know how it goes.

So many books these days are required by agents and publishers to be 90k+ words or 100k+ words etc just to be considered for production. That's such a time investment for the reader and the writer to extend a concept or theme into such a long winded ordeal that probably isn't needed.

Lots of new faces here.

Lots of new faces here.

Anyone up for some pool and a Whiskey Sour (hi @bartender)? I've got some rock on the Jukebox.

As many of the other Midnight patrons have also said, Fall is my favorite time of year. Flannel weather, mornings with a window cracked open, and weekend evenings by a bonfire can't be beat.

I've been so productive this past week. I got two freelancing commissions, and one of them turned into the beginnings of a Startup. We've got some problems from the get-go, but it's fun and it inspires me. New beginnings are the new norm for me, I guess :).

I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm writing software, I have great friends, and I *almost* have a plan, so what more do I really need?

I'll buy the first game of pool.

Vittu is too friendly so I appreciate the offer to bring her along. I've had a hard day of pretending to be someone else and running out of my favorite food (Fatso peanut butter). What a lovely spot midnight is.

I see a free stool by the Bar, and I decide to sit next to @tychi. My presentation went well today, I'm glad it's done. It's light a weight off my shoulder. I'm feeling so light compared to yesterday at the same time. And you know, it wasn't much. I just had to present something. It wasn't really long either. I think my brain just built up all the possible things that can go wrong and focused on it. All of that to say that I prefer today much more than yesterday, and I'll enjoy the evening in this place.

You probably just needed to vent, but I think we shouldn't have to live for work. I'm in a lucky position where I can currently choose not to continue a job that's making miserable and I hope other can too. Many people just don't because that's not what you're supposed to...

Cheers, @bitdweller. I think you're 100% right. I've been considering that for a while now. To be honest I'm scared to leave my job. Do I want to? Yes. I just don't know if I have the courage yet.

Welcome to the Midnight! Hopefully it's a welcome rest from your day today, and helps you unwind for tomorrow. Best of luck on your presentation!

Thanks @nsilvestri! Great to meet you all!
