Don't Cry Out Loud

Sun, 31 May 2020

I just found out "Don't Cry Out Loud" is a real song. I'd only ever heard it in the outro to the He-Man version of that Four Non Blondes song. It's an incredibly beautiful and sad song. Apparently Peter Allen, the co-writer with Carol Bayer Sager, wrote it because he was taught not to show his feelings "even after his father commited suicide" (Genius.com). The song as recorded by Melissa Manchester is pretty typical for its time, with an orchestral swell that fades out, and a little horn trill thing. Manchester's vocals are affecting, though, and very nice.

I came across the song in real life through watching "Schitt's Creek," when I'm assuming Roland got kicked out of the house by his wife. I wonder if the writers knew the history of the song. Probably not, or maybe so. Hm.
