Original post (What Do I like About Gemini?)
I've been using gemini for a few days, I like it. Here are some things about it that I like, and some thoughts about where it fits in my life.
First, the protocol. I love that gemini is such a simple format, and such a simple protocol, where you're in control. Whenever you load a page it loads only that page, no external requests are made. It's always over TLS. I wish every web page that didn't require interactive features was on here, because it's much better than the http web in ways important to me.
The people on here seem nice, though I haven't interacted with anyone here yet. But I enjoyed reading some of the other gemlogs.
Gemini is not just a small protocol, at the moment it also has a small user base. But, I actually don't think the small user base is an important part of gemini's niceness. Even in the regular web, you can find and join small communities of nice people, so even if gemini grows a lot, I think I could still find good things here.
I don't know if gemini is like the old web, which I've never experienced. But it doesn't have to be, gemini is nice on its own merits, regardless of if it's like the old web or not.
(I also edited this section of the original post to include an apology for being rude)
In the end, gemini is just a simple place to post stuff, and to find stuff. I have no expectations of meeting people or making friends, because I pretty much never fit in anywhere I go, but it's a cozy place to be.
