2022 Week 36/37: Catch-Up and Photos

Rob's capsule has been quiet over the last several days. The reason is that I've decided to finally move the capsule off of my Raspberry Pi 1B and onto a faster machine. That, combined with a mid-week sinus infection and multiple personal commitments, left me with little time to add content.

My capsule is now served on Rocky Linux 8 using KVM. I had originally intended to stay with gmnisrv to power the server, but I was unable to get it to compile on Rocky. I then set up vger using ncat and a systemd socket, only to discover that vger does not support client certificates. gmid also had problems compiling, so I turned to Jetforce, with which I'm now very happy.

In my preliminary tests, the capsule is far more responsive than it was on the Pi. Chess over Gemini in particular now loads matches in a fraction of a second, when the Python code would take six seconds or more on the Pi. Even static pages load in a flash.

While the Raspberry Pi was a fun experiment with low-power computing, its capabilities were being pushed to the limit with my CGI scripts. Were I to implement a few others I have in the works, the thing might have burst into flames. However, it still isn't completely useless. I will probably continue to use it for small tools--a print server, a radio controller, or even some Gopher hosting.

I'm still not completely familiar with Jetforce, and I'm sure in the process of migrating hardware I broke something. Don't hesitate to reach out if something appears amiss. In the meantime, I will be out of town for most of the rest of September, so log entries might still be few and far between.

A Full Sushi Train

I live in the American/Central time zone, but my job's hours are American/Eastern. As a result, I get out of work an hour earlier than most people in the area. When my wife and I went to a local sushi restaurant after work last week, we were one of the first customers through the door, and the train was still full.

New Card

There are several arcade chains in the region, but we tend to visit some a lot more than others. It had been so long since I'd visited this one that my original card no longer functioned. Fortunately, I was able to transfer all my points and tickets without fuss.
