2021 Week 27/28: Thoughts and Catch-Up

2021-07-19

My parents invited me to go to a car show with them yesterday. I thought the show was to be held inside a nearby convention center, so I didn't take a hat, apply sunscreen, or use any other protective gear. My face and left shoulder were sunburned pretty badly as a result. I was also sunburned at the air show I attended at the beginning of the month; this is my second serious sunburn in two weeks. I'm starting to think I should just carry a bottle of Coppertone with me everywhere.

All of my smartphone apps come from F-Droid these days, except for a core few than cannot be acquired anywhere other than the Google Play Store. While updating some of those apps through Aurora Store this morning, I perused the top free apps from Google Play. I was immediately struck with the feeling that I didn't understand why anyone would want to use any of them. They all seemed like inane time-wasters that were only designed to take one's money, take one's data, or both. Don't people actually try to use the computers in their pockets like computers anymore?

The grass in our lawn has grown quite tall, and it's been difficult to find time to mow it due to persistent recent rain. I was finally able to cut part of the backyard on Friday. During one pass, I hit a small twig, and when I rolled past it I discovered it was covered in fur and blood. It turned out I had mowed over a rabbit burrow, and the mower had hit and killed a rabbit kitten. Two other kittens in the burrow were unharmed but very frightened. It was a rather gruesome mess to clean up.

I've begun to keep a food diary. I don't necessarily count calories in there, but it does help me keep track of how much junk food I'm eating, as well as my weight. It also gives me yet another use for my fountain pen, which has been receiving some heavy use in the last few weeks.

One of my dreams is to get a private pilot's license and be able to fly my own plane. To help with that goal, I'm learning about the basic principles of flight control using simulators. I have previously owned a joystick (the Logitech stick to the right in this picture), but not a full control set.

We came across an early-1960s Chrysler Imperial Crown Coupe at the car show, a vehicle I had never seen before. Much to our amusement, when we looked in the seat, we discovered a miniature 45 RPM phonograph turntable.
