Create a "proxy mesh" which is just a simple mesh that approximates the character or object. It should not be highly detailed.
Use subdivision modifier to smooth out the proxy.
Use data transfer to pull the smooth no-detail proxy's normals down to the complicated model.
Use normal smoothers / abnormal plugin to correct any remaining flaws in the surface normals.
