When doing radial symmetry, the angle to separate distirbuted items around the circle is 360 degrees divided by the number of faces to be put around the circle.
Creating the cylindral object by using a profile object which uses screw/extrusions to create geometry, and is fitted to the cylinder shape via the curve modifier. The planar, pre-curve version of the model can be subjected to boolean modifiers to cut holes in to it before it becomes circular.
