Given a good company of good people, "similar" has to be pretty stretchy. Mastodon et al. demonstrate that microblogging is not inherently toxic, and I don't think it's *necessary* that building advertising in has to make it bad, but we do have a bad history of balancing public good against profits, once profits become a driver.
