there are major apps : conversations, monal, gajim, kaidan...
WhatsApp is a mess and absolutely not intuitive. I had to use a few months ago and I was lost with some feature (adding a file to a conversation for example)
About lag, it is the problem when everybody use the same major server. That's why we have to install more instances
