Since systemd v245 there's the "userdb" subsystem in systemd. It's a modernized extension of the venerable UNIX user database, i.e. "struct passwd" and related structures.
userdb records are ultimately JSON structures, that can carry a lot more information than what /etc/passwd+/etc/shadow can carry. It's heavily used by systemd-logind, systemd-homed but generic andβ¦
