I was thinking about this recently. I was reading about Simon Stevin, a Flemish guy from the 1500s who introduced (reinvented?) decimal fractions to Europe. Now taught in primary school.
(He also created the Dutch names for a lot of my high school subjects: math, physics, chemistry. His words for subtraction and division we also still use. He made a land sailing car. He was a freaking genius but wrote in Dutch so is less well known even here)
