For me, I haven't worked for a company that used a firewall and VPN for at least 20 years. Either working at startups that depend on SaaS, or working at remote-first organizations, using a VPN hasn't been a big part of my work life. I think we had some things that you needed VPN access for at Wikimedia, like database or server access, but I rarely did those things.
